L'Asus Proart Station PD5 è uno dei primi PC che si rivolge esplicitamente ai creatori, al contrario della raffica di editing video e in streaming di PC che sono davvero solo desktop da gioco. Sfortunatamente, il PD5 non fa una forte discussione per questo segmento a causa del suo vecchio processore Intel, ad alto numero di termiche e rumore di ventola.

Nonostante un telaio elegante degno del nostro miglior carrello per PC desktop, il PD5 è trattenuto da un processore di ultima generazione che sottoperme in modo enorme rispetto alle offerte moderne. Mancano molte funzionalità essenziali che sono disponibili per i creatori oggi, il tutto vendendo allo stesso prezzo dei desktop con loro.

Design

La PD5 della Proart Station sembra fantastica, ma non ha un ottimo design. Esteticamente, le linee strette sulla parte anteriore della custodia sembrano fantastiche, accentuate da sottili strisce a LED che possono mostrare la temperatura della CPU/GPU, i tempi di rendering e altro ancora. Il marchio Proart è fantastico e fa sembrare il PD5 un PC davvero unico.

La funzione sulla forma deve entrare in gioco ad un certo punto, tuttavia, e il PD5 è disfunzionale. Il PC sembra quasi intenzionalmente progettato per mantenere più calore possibile. Le prese d'aspirazione anteriore sono sottili e non portano abbastanza aria e lo scarico è limitato a una ventola da 80 mm nella parte posteriore e ad alcune prese d'aria sul pannello laterale. La stragrande maggioranza di questo caso è chiusa al flusso d'aria, e questo è un problema.

È ancora più un problema considerando i componenti all'interno. Il Proart PD5 viene fornito con uno - contali, uno - ventola all'interno: uno scarico da 80 mm nella parte posteriore della custodia. Asus utilizza anche un sottile dispositivo di raffreddamento della CPU che ricorda un dispositivo di raffreddamento di serie e una scheda grafica in stile soffiaggio. Dal caso agli interni, il Proart PD5 sembra che stia cercando di essere il più caldo possibile.

Il Proart PD5 ha un bell'aspetto e piccoli tocchi come un blocco sul pulsante di accensione sono i benvenuti. Ma lo sfarzo si lava rapidamente quando il PC suona come (e diventa caldo come) una corretta workstation ma non si comporta come uno (leggi la nostra recensione di Lenovo P620 per una macchina che lo fa).

Specifiche e prezzi

La PD5 della Proart Station può sfoggiare un po 'di hardware serio. Hai accesso a un Core I9-11900 per la GPU, un RTX 3070 o RTX A2000 per la GPU, fino a 128 GB di memoria DDR4-3200 e fino a 6 TB di archiviazione distribuita su un SSD e un disco rigido rotante.

Il problema è la CPU, che è un'offerta di generazione precedente. Fare un passo indietro di una generazione non è eccezionale, ma è peggio considerando che la piattaforma di 11a generazione di Intel non era esattamente un aggiornamento che gli appassionati speravano.

Anche il core i9-11900 più costoso è una CPU imbarazzante, quindi la stazione PD5 della Proart mi ha lasciato grattarmi la testa. Le opzioni di Ryzen 5000 di AMD hanno più senso per i creatori e sono ancora tra le migliori CPU del 2022. È un'occasione persa considerando che Asus vende la scheda madre Wi-Fi del Creatore di Proart X570. Quel che è peggio è che la piattaforma di 12a generazione di Intel è significativamente più veloce e viene fornito con funzionalità migliori per i creatori.

Il principale è DDR5. DDR5 avrebbe probabilmente gonfiato il costo della Proart Station PD5, ma offre reali vantaggi in app creative come Adobe Premiere Pro. Anche senza DDR5, sei bloccato in una delle peggiori piattaforme di Intel senza l'opzione di aggiornare a meno che tu non strappaggi la scheda madre.

È davvero difficile giustificare le specifiche del PD5. Puoi raccogliere un desktop Dell XPS 8950 configurato identicamente con la 12a generazione di Intel per less money di quanto ASUS sta caricando per il PD5. La mia configurazione è in orologio a $ 2.000, anche se ne ho visto alcuni a partire da $ 1.700.

Non sono sicuro di quanto alta la macchina si ridimensionerà perché le configurazioni di fascia alta non sono disponibili in questo momento. Non immagino che la macchina supererà i $ 3.000, però. Non è un prezzo negativo, ma il PD5 è essenzialmente un computer del 2021, non 2022, quindi i PC moderni con una fascia di prezzo simili saranno sempre un affare migliore.

The ProArt PD5 offers some room to grow, but not much. You can swap the GPU and RAM, and there are a couple of drive bays at the bottom of the machine. These are tool-less, which is a nice touch. Unfortunately, Asus doesn’t include cables already routed to the bay.

Inside, the case is remarkably small. Asus calls it a “full-sized ATX tower,” but that’s far from the case. You couldn’t even fit a standard ATX motherboard inside the case, and the power supply is shmushed up against the drive bay. There isn’t any room for fans, either, just the single 80mm fan in the back of the case.

Considering the case is one of the worst parts of the ProArt PD5, upgradability is a bit of a moot point. You can, technically, add some hardware to the machine. But you’re so limited by room and thermals that you probably shouldn’t. The machine is locked to Intel’s 11th-gen platform, too, which isn’t compatible with Intel’s modern CPUs.

Prestazione

The ProArt PD5 would be a solid desktop if it was released a year ago. In 2022, it’s a disappointment. It underperforms across the board, hindered by the weaker eight-core Core i7-11700 that has been surpassed by Intel’s more recent 12th-gen offerings. I included a couple of machines for CPU reference below (even if the HP Omen 45L isn’t really competing with Asus’ machine).

The biggest issue for the ProArt Station PD5 is that it’s based on Intel’s 11th-gen platform. Asus announced the machine in September 2021, just a couple of months before Intel launched its 12th-gen Alder Lake platform. Despite that, machines only started showing up at the beginning of 2022.

The 32GB of DDR4 memory and RTX 3070 graphics card should make the PD5 a solid midrange creator PC, but the hardware is held back by the Core i7-11700. The Dell XPS Desktop 8950 shows that. Even with half of the RAM and a weaker video card (the RTX 3060 Ti), it outperforms the ProArt PD5 by nearly 13% in Premiere Pro and almost 12% in PCMark 10.

Intel’s 12th-gen chips are leaps and bounds ahead of the company’s previous offerings (you can read our Core i9-12900K review for the proof). It’s hard justifying a desktop with hardware that’s out of date, especially when that hardware so clearly underperforms compared to modern offerings.

It’s possible Asus will update the PD5 with the 12th-gen chip, though, which would improve the performance situation a lot. This could be an issue with supply shortages, and Asus could be planning to add 12th-gen options down the road.

Gaming performance

The ProArt PD5 is a creator-focused machine; but let’s be honest, it’d be a shame to not let an RTX 3070 rip through some games. Unfortunately, this machine isn’t the best setting for Nvidia’s GPU (which is among the best graphics cards you can buy). You can see the results I recorded from a few games at 1440p below. I used the highest preset for each game.

Again, the Core i7-11700 is a hindrance. In a one-for-one against the MSI Aegis RS 12 with a Core i7-12700KF, the ProArt PD5 lags. It’s not too bad in GPU-limited titles like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Red Dead Redemption 2. The gap is a bit wider at 1080p, but the Asus machine only lagged by around 6% at most.

Forza Horizon 4, which is a little heavier on the CPU, shows a different side of the story. The Dell XPS Desktop 8950 managed to outperform the ProArt PD5 despite using a weaker GPU. Dell’s machine uses the Core i5-12600K, too, not the Core i7-12700K.

Outside of performance. I need to point out temperatures. During a run of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the GPU reached 84 degrees Celsius. That’s not a problem in isolation, but the card reached that temperature after about 30 seconds. For long rendering sessions, those kinds of temperatures could cause issues down the line. They’re safe, but you shouldn’t sustain them for hours on end.

Software

ASUS è generalmente bravo a Bloatware - Leggi la nostra recensione Asus Rog Ga35DX per un esempio - e il PD5 Proart non è diverso. Per Bloat, la macchina viene fornita con McAfee Internet Security. All'inizio non era troppo invadente, ma tieni presente che programmi come McAfee tendono a diventare fastidiosi solo una volta che è il momento di rinnovare.

Altrimenti, la macchina viene fornita con Myasus per il supporto e l'hub Creator Proart per personalizzare la macchina. Mi piace l'hub creatore. Ti dà una solida panoramica del tuo sistema vitale e ti consente di regolare le luci sulla parte anteriore del PD5 per mostrare tempi di rendering rimanenti o fornire avvertimenti sulla temperatura della CPU/GPU.

Mi piace particolarmente la funzione di lavoro intelligente, che ti consente di creare gruppi di app che puoi avviare con un solo clic. Il mio unico problema è che ASUS non emerge l'hub del Creatore di Proart allo stesso modo di Myasus (che è appuntato alla barra delle applicazioni). A parte questo, è un ottimo software, seppure semplice.

L'Asus Proart Station PD5 è una cattiva scelta per i creatori nel 2022. Sebbene avessi problemi con le termiche e il rumore della ventola, il vero assassino è il processore di ultima generazione al centro della macchina. ASUS probabilmente voleva rilasciare questa macchina nel 2021 prima che arrivassero i processori di prossima generazione di Intel, ma i ritardi sono stati a danno della macchina.

Sì, ma non molti in questo momento. Il concorrente principale è il desktop Dell XPS, disponibile con i più recenti processori di Intel, la memoria DDR5 e le opzioni GPU più potenti. Detto questo, manca di certificazione ISV e accesso alle GPU di workstation di Nvidia.

Quanto durerà?
